AnnieReb's Battle with AOL & LakesViewing Lake Applets "Special Note for JigZone Puzzle Users" Howdy to all you AOL members!! Yep!! I am also an AOL user!! Like you, I have had the headaches, the frustrations, the aggravations of dealing with trying to view all the fancy stuff that is on the web by using the AOL browser!! But .. also, like you, I still hang on to my AOL account for various good reasons!! Soooo .. we will now try to deal with how to WIN this tiny little battle!! First and foremost .. NONE of the old browsers will let you view any of the java applets. This means that you must UPGRADE to the latest and greatest equipment that is available!! I am not talking about spending lots of dollars, these are FREE upgrades, all that is necessary is a bit of your time, a tad of patience, and paying attention to the "settings" on your computer! Note: AOL 7 is now out and ready for download and installation for AOL users. Personally, I'm still running AOL 6, I like the AOL 6 Browser, and I'm a bit tired of downloading and installing new programs that still have 'bugs' in them. If you have downloaded, and are using AOL 7, and have wonderful reasons for upgrading, please feel free to send me your reasons, and if you wish to write a tutorial on AOL 7, I'll post it here, and add the copyright for the tutorial in your name. Step # 1 .. Go to 'keyword'. Click on that, type in "upgrade", click "go", then just follow the screen prompts, take your time, do this step by step, this is one of the things that AOL makes very easy on us users! Step #2 .. After you have successfully downloaded and launched the new AOL program, to get the most out of your web surfing experiences .. go to "My AOL", click on 'preferences', then in the window that comes up, click on 'www', when that window pops up, ( AOL Internet Properties), click the 'Security' tab. Make sure you check the Security Setting at medium!! If you put a check mark on "high", you will not be able to see about 50% of web graphics, or be able to view all pages that are interesting! While you are still in this 'window', click on 'Web Graphics'. UNCHECK the box that says 'use compressed graphics'!! Trust me, using compressed graphics does NOT speed up your loading time on any pages!! Assuming you have done all the above, if you use AOL's Browser as your main 'roadway' to the Web, you now should be able to view any and all Lake applets, plus the other java applets that are out there!! Once in a while some people still have a problem, but usually this is all that is necessary! Let's do some quick 'Trouble Shooting'!! First .. Have you cleared your cache, (Deleted those Temporary Internet Files)? People .. this is very important, if you plan on having a any fun on the 'net', view the newest pages, you absolutley 'must' keep your Temporary Internet Files folder cleared. Don't forget .. if you haven't cleared your 'cache' lately, when you go to a favorite site, always go to your Browser toolbar, and click the 'refresh' or 'reload button'. This is the ONLY way to assure that you are actually seeing the newest page on that website. Second .. Have you, (while on-line), gone to your 'screen name' and checked the box that says you are '18 or older'? [grin] Third .. Have you double checked your 'Security Setting', and made sure it is set no higher than medium? (Sometimes it might be necessary to set it all the way to "Low"!) Now for the fun part!! It is time to go SEE some of those Beautiful Lake Applets!!! Still can't view the Lake Applets? Okay, now you have done everything I have suggested, you go surfing, looking for those beautiful 'Lakes', and ZAP!! Not a single one of them will show up on your monitor!! Okay, calm down!! There is a little deal with settings called .. getting your computer "java enabled"!! This requires a bit of bravery in changing some basic settings!! Not to worry!! It is not a major problem, and it won't 'break' your computer!! *Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer "built in", or integrated in with your system. Step #1 .. Launch Microsoft Internet Explorer. Step#2 .. Look up at the top toolbar, click on 'view', then click on 'internet options'. When the new window pops up, click on the 'advanced' tab. Scroll down in the new window until you see "Java VM", CHECK all boxes in that category!! After you have checked all the boxes, you will have to re-start your computer. When it is up and going, you should have the ability to view any and all java applets on the Web!! Go to the next page to find some tips on Browsers!! Tips on publishing your own Lake applets onto your AOL web space!! Java Viewing Tips ... just added!!
