Lakes on Homestead

how to .....

Updated November, 2002.

Hello, HomeSteaders!!

Soooooo .. you have a Web Site on Homestead, and it's looking really great!  You've learned to use the Homestead editor, you've learned how to get pictures and sound files uploaded to you space, and now you would like to go a step further and put up a *java lake applet* on one of your pages!  The problem is .. you've hit a brick wall, and don't have the slightest clue about just how to achieve this!  Okay .. take a deep breath, flex those fingers, get ready to attack the keyboard and the mouse!  We'll take this step by step! (Actually, we HAVE to take this step by step, that's the only way to get one of those beautiful lakes to work on Homestead!)

Step #1 ... The first thing is to go to one of the great  *Lake* tutorials posted on the web.  The tutorials will give you the basic instructions on how to prepare an image, such as sizing, cropping, etc., so that it will make a pretty *lake* on your page.  You also have to download the *lake class* file to your hard drive, (later you will upload the same file to your Homestead web space.)  Wonderful lake tutorials can be found at either List of Tutorials or  at
the Lake Tutorial by Uncle Gus.   Go ahead and bookmark this page, so that after you study the lake tutorials, you can return here.

Step #2 ... It is important to upload the lake class file and the image you will be using for your *Lake* before you click 'edit' to edit your page.   After you have signed in to Homestead,  then clicked on "Go to Your Web Pages" , then clicked on "my web pages", you will see your Homesteads, your pages and your files. {See example below}

Your 'Files' box will look like the one on the left, (you will have your own files listed in yours).  Click 'import', then browse your hard drive, until you find where you placed the 'lake class' file, and import it.  When that file is uploaded to your files, click 'import' again, and browse your hard drive, find where you placed the image you are going to use for your lake applet, and import that, also.  It is important to make a note of the width and height of your image, you will need that information to size your *html snippet*.

Step #3 ... Now is the time to either 'Create a new Page', or edit an existing page.  This is the page where you will be placing your lake applet.  Do what you normally do with the Homestead editor, get your background, your title, and text on your page, if you want text to appear above the applet.

Important .. Do NOT import your picture to your page as you normally do for just plain pictures!!  The image and the 'Lake effect' will be brought to your page with the html code!!

Step #4 ... We are ready to use the *html snippet* to do the code for the lake applet.  You will find the *html snippet*  at the bottom of your working window in the Homestead Editor, it is next to 'import html files', or you can go to the top tool bar, choose Elements>Imported Files>HTML.  When you have the *html snippet* window on your page ....
{see example below}

Double click the snippet box to bring up the next window.
{See next example below}

You will see another window appear on the upper left hand corner, that is where you will 'fine tune' your html snippet.  You already read the lake applet tutorials, and you already have your image for your *Lake* imported.  You made a note of its width and height. Type in the correct width and height numbers in the boxes.  When that is done, go up and click on "edit HTML".  {See next example below}

This is where you type in your html for the lake applet.  This is the code that will  let your image become a *lake*.

<APPLET CODE="lake.class" CODEBASE="http://yourhomesteadname.homestead.com/files/" WIDTH=???" HEIGHT=???">

<PARAM NAME="image" VALUE=
"http://yourhomesteadname.homestead.com/files/yourimage.jpg">

</APPLET>

Where you see the question marks after width and height, replace those with your proper width and height numbers, being careful not to disturb any of the quotation marks, or equal signs, these must remain as they are for the code to work.  Now, where you see the *yourimage*.jpg, replace *yourimage* with the filename you gave your image that you uploaded for your lake.  Replace *yourhomesteadname* with your personal Homestead Name for your site. Double check your typing, make sure that all is correct.

Step #5 ...  Save your page!!!

Step #6 ... Now, you can 'preview' your page, making sure the applet really is a *Lake*, has those beautiful ripples, and is placed just where you wanted it on your page.  Double check your page, make sure no elements are overlapping, if they are, then your page will look 'messy' in most browsers.  If all is well, then you can continue to do the rest of your page, adding links, etc.

More advanced Webmasters and Windows users can use the 'copy & paste' function to place the code onto the html snippet.

"Thanks" to KlueLass for the mechanical help on this, and "Thanks" to Shirley for testing my 'instructions'!!

And "Thanks" to Bruce for the 'nudge' to get this project done!!

Many "Thanks" go out to the 'Support' technicians at Homestead!  They are a super group, and don't mind helping!
A special "Thanks" to Alex, a Homestead Support guy, who took the time to write out detailed instructions!!

Note .. Homestead updates very often, sometimes this affects the way html snippets work
on your Homestead site.  If you encounter serious problems, contact Homestead Support.

Please take a moment to go view my Lake Applets!!  Thank You!
