Battle for a Bridge

The Re-enactment of the "Battle  for Burnside Bridge" took place at Eagle Point Park, in Clinton, Iowa.  This beautiful park overlooks the Mississippi River.  The photo on the right was taken mid-morning ,during hazy, overcast conditions.  The view, however, was still breathtaking!!

The day of the 'actual' battle, Sept.17,1862 was the bloodiest single day of combat in the history of American arms.  It took place around a creek in Maryland named Antietam.   In that one day, 23,500 Union and Confederates were killed or wounded.  The Bridge is named after Gen. Ambrose Burnside.  He made several bungling attempts to take the bridge.  It was finally won for the Union by a Pennsylvania regiment that was promised whiskey if it could take the bridge from the Confederates.

The following photos are of the Re-enactors and their encampments.
